Before open, after close, explained. Why earnings land at 7 AM or 4:05 PM.

Companies report results outside regular trading hours (9:30 AM–4:00 PM ET) so everyone gets the news at the same time before the market reacts.

BMO = Before market open

AMC = after market close. The first reaction happens in pre-market or after-hours trading.

How to read it:

• Extended-hours trading is thinner, so prices swing more.

• The conference call, usually an hour after the release, can reverse the first move.

• Our weekly calendar marks every $10B+ report as before open or after close.

Watch out: An after-hours price is not the final verdict. Plenty of moves fade by the next open.

Save this for later. Next up: Profit margin.
